Her marriage record states that Margaret was from Valtos. Because the only Stewart family in the vicinity of Valtos in 1841 was that of Kenneth and Ann Nicolson, it has been presumed that Margaret was their daughter. The likelihood is strengthened by the facts that in 1851 a Kenneth McLean, aged 3, was a grandson in the household of Ann Nicolson and that in 1861 he was a 12 year-old scholar and nephew in the household of John Stewart, son of Kenneth and Ann.
